Homers Help Minutewomen Over Huskies, 7-4

STORRS, Conn. - University of Massachusetts softball scored three runs in the sixth inning and topped the University of Connecticut, 7-4, on Tuesday afternoon, at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
Redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza paced the UMass offense, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Cozza’s home run in the sixth inning was the first of two in a row, as senior Taylor Carbone added a home run to go back-to-back and take the 7-4 lead.
The Minutewomen got on the board in the first inning. Freshman Erin Stacevicz singled and stole second base, scoring after Carbone sent a single into center field.
The Huskies tied the game in the home half of the second inning. Lexi Gifford singled to right-center field to score Ryne Nakama to knot the game, 1-1.
Cozza’s first home run came in the third inning after Stacevicz tripled with one out. The home run was Cozza’s fifth of the year and gave UMass a 3-2 lead.
The Huskies took a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Jacklyn Dubois singled to score two runs and moved up to third on an error. Dubois would later score on an RBI bunt single from Taylor Townsend.
Junior Tara Klee singled with one out in the fifth inning and would score to tie the game when classmate Ashton Wince doubled. UMass would follow with the three-run inning in the sixth.
The Minutewomen are back in action on Thursday when they host Boston College at 4 p.m. at Sortino Field in Amherst, Mass.
