Minutewomen Split Saturday Doubleheader with Bonnies

OLEAN, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts softball topped St. Bonaventure in the first game of Satruday’s doubleheader 6-1, but fell in the second game to the Bonnies by a 5-2 score at Joyce Field in Olean, N.Y.
Game One
The Minutewomen topped St. Bonaventure University 6-1 in the day’s first game, as the Minutewomen had 13 hits in the win.
Redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza launched a two-run home run in the first inning and Kaycee Carbone added a blast in the fifth to help propel the UMass offense.
The Bonnies would threaten throughout the game, but only got on the board in the home half of the first inning when Hailey Blencowe hit a home run to left center field.
UMass scored in the third inning from an RBI single off the bat of junior Tara Klee, which drove in Cozza from third base and gave the Minutewomen a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, freshman Erin Stacevicz singled and later scored from a sacrifice fly courtesy of senior Taylor Carbone. They added two more runs when K. Carbone homered off the scoreboard in right field.
Sophomore Meg Colleran (11-13) picked up the win in the circle for the Minutewomen, as she threw a complete game and allowed just one run. The pitcher struck out five in the game, ending the game by striking out the side in the final inning.
Game Two
A three-run sixth inning helped the Bonnies top the Minutewomen as UMass fell in the second game of the doubleheader 5-2.
UMass grabbed an early lead in the first inning, when T. Carbone sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score Stacevicz for the first run. Klee followed with a single up the middle to give UMass its second run, as Jena Cozza scored on the play.
The Bonnies tied the game in the third inning. Alissa Karjel led the inning off with a home run for St. Bonaventure to bring the game within a run, and SBU tied the game later in the inning from a single by Kelli Rohan to score Emily McDonough from third.
SBU added three runs in the sixth inning to pull away. Karjel added an RBI single, followed by Alexandra Deal scoing on an error to make the game 4-2. Karjel then scored on a double steal executed with McDonough on first base.
The teams will square off in the series finale at 12 p.m. tomorrow at Joyce Field in Olean, N.Y.
