Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts softball topped Fordham in the first of two games, but fell in the second on Saturday afternoon at Bahoshy Field in Bronx, N.Y. The Minutewomen move to 7-18 on the season and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play.

Game One

Senior Taylor Carbone homered and doubled as the Minutewomen topped Fordham in the day’s first game, 3-2.

Carbone’s blast came in the fourth inning when she led off the inning. It was the second home run of the season for the senior and the 12th of her career. The Minutewomen added another run in the inning when freshman Kaycee Carbone hit a ground-rule double to center field to score classmate Shea Newsome from second base.

Fordham answered back in the fourth, getting a run back. Sophomore Amy Van Hoven singled to start the inning and later scored on a ground-rule double from Lindsay Mayer.

UMass capitalized on a fielding error by Van Hoven to score their third run. Senior Lindsey Zenk sent a chopper up the middle that hit off of Van Hoven’s glove, which scored freshman Erin Stacevicz from third on the play.

Sophomore Meg Colleran (5-11) earned the win in the circle for UMass, throwing a complete game and allowed just two runs.

Game Two

Graduate studet Rachel Gillen took a perfect game into the sixth inning as the Rams topped the Minutewomen 4-0.

K. Carbone had the first UMass hit of the game when she sent a ball to right field that one-hopped the wall for a triple. The freshman was stranded at third as Gillen retired the next two UMass hitters to escape the jam.

Fordham scored two runs in the fifth inning with a two-run home run off the bat of freshman Jessica Hughes. Hughes sent a ball to right field that just stayed fair and extended Fordham’s lead to 3-0.

The first Rams run was scored in the fourth inning. Gillen singled through the left side that scored junior Sydney Canessa.

The Minutewomen are off until Saturday when they open at Sortino Field against George Mason at noon in a doubleheader.
