Three-Run Fourth Inning Puts Bison over Minutewomen
March 20, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Meg Colleran set a season high in strikeouts but University of Massachusetts softball fell to North Dakota State on Sunday, 4-2, in its final game of the Maryland Invitational. The Minutewomen move to 6-16 on the season.
On Saturday, the Minutewomen led North Dakota State through three innings but the game was halted due to rain. When the game resumed, NDSU picked up three runs to start the day. Inheriting runners on first and second, Bison senior Jackie Stifter singled to score a run. NDSU added two more runs in the inning when sophomore Bre Beatty doubled to right-center field.
UMass’ runs came in the first inning. Freshman Erin Stacevicz led off the game with a single and scored on redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza’s base hit that was misplayed by the Bison defense. Cozza would score the second run for the Minutewomen after getting caught up in a run down.
Senior Olivia Godin walked twice in the game, while Stacevicz added two singles and scored a run.
Colleran (5-10) picked up seven strikeouts in the game, which was one short of her career high set last season against DePaul. The sophomore struck out the side in the fifth inning.
Kaitlyn Leddy earned the win in the circle for the Bison. The pitcher came in to start the day after not appearing on Saturday and threw four innings allowing just one hit.
Because of Saturday’s rainouts, the Sunday game against Boston University was canceled.
