Comeback Effort Falls Short in Atlantic 10 Opener

BRONX, N.Y. - University of Massachusetts softball fell to Fordham University in its Atlantic 10 conference opener, 5-3 on Friday night at Bahoshy Field in Bronx, N.Y.
Heading into the seventh inning down 5-2, the Minutewomen clawed back to score a run. Senior Taylor Carbone walked to load the bases with two outs. With Olivia Godin at bat, Fordham senior pitcher Rachel Gillen fired a wild pitch to the backstop that scored freshman Erin Stacevicz and put the score at 5-3.
Fordham drew the first score of the game from an RBI single from sophomore Morgan Figueroa. With runners on second and third, Figueroa sent a groundball softly up the middle to score the runner from third base.
Down a run in the third, redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza reached base via a hit by pitch. Carbone followed with a double into the right-centerfield gap to score Cozza and tie the game.
The difference maker came in the fifth inning, when Gillen launched a two-run home run to extend the Fordham lead to 5-1.
The Minutewomen got on the board again in the top of the sixth. With runners on second and third following a double hit off the wall by senior Olivia Godin, classmate Lindsey Zenk drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Meg Colleran (5-11) struck out five batters in her six innings of work. She fanned two Fordham hitters in the second inning.
The team’s are back in action on Saturday when they play a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
