March 11, 2016 | Softball
University of Massachusetts softball split a pair of games on Friday in the Florida Atlantic Parents’ Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. The Minutewomen move to 5-10 on the season following the day’s action.
Game One
Sophomore Meg Colleran threw a complete game shutout as UMass topped Robert Morris, 2-0.
Colleran (4-5) worked all seven innings in the contest and allowed just four hits. The reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week struck out two batters, as well.
UMass scored first when senior infielder Taylor Carbone used a sacrifice fly to score redshirt sophomore Jena Cozza. Cozza led the game off with a hit-by-pitch, giving the Minutewomen a free runner early.
Robert Morris threatened in the sixth inning as the first two runners in the frame reached base via error. However, Colleran and the Minutewomen defense held strong and recorded three straight outs to end the Colonial threat.
The Minutewomen added an insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning. Freshman Erin Stacevicz scored after classmate Kaitlyn Stavinoha singled into left field to push the UMass lead to 2-0.
Colleran retired the side in order in the final inning to shut the door on RMU.
Game Two
UMass fell to No. 19/17 Minnesota 12-0 in the second game of the day for the Minutewomen.
The Gophers scored in every inning but the fifth on their way to victory. Their biggest inning came in the second, posting six runs in the frame as Kayla Wenner’s two-run triple highlighted the inning.
UMass picked up a hit in the third inning, when junior Ashton Wince singled up the middle. Freshman Kaycee Carbone followed with a walk and both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. However, the Minutewomen were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity as junior Sara Groenewegen worked out of the jam.
Taylor Carbone (1-4) started in the circle for UMass and took the loss in the contest. Junior Tara Klee came in the game in relief of Carbone, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out four batters.
