PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's scored on a throwing error in the tenth inning to defeat Massachusetts, 5-4, as the teams split their two-game series at the SJU Softball Field Saturday.
UMass (15-20, 9-5 Atlantic 10) got 11 hits but left 12 runners on base, including eight in scoring position. Cyndil Matthew and Tiffany Meeks each had three hits for the Minutewomen. UMass also committed three errors that led to the final two runs being unearned.
Caroline Raymond (12-9) took the loss after scattering nine hits and striking out two on a career-high 176 pitches.
Saint Joseph's (29-7-1, 12-4) also left 12 on base. Taryn Ashway (24-3) started for three innings and re-entered later in the game as she went seven total innings and allowed three runs on nine hits. She also struck out four.
SJU got on the board in the first when it loaded the bases with one out. Sarah Yoos was then hit by a pitch for the second-consecutive day and Brandi Harkness followed with an RBI groundout to second to put the Hawks ahead 2-0.
UMass saw its offense pick up in the third when four hits helped produce three two-out runs. Quianna Diaz-Patterson led off with a double before the next two batters were retired. Christine Della Vecchia hit a single that bounced over Ashway's glove and scored Diaz-Patterson. Meeks doubled to right center as Della Vecchia tied it at two when she scored from first. Teea Rogers gave the Minutewomen a 3-2 lead with her single that brought Meeks home from second.
The Hawks tied it at 3-3 with a pair of doubles in the fifth. Monica Aguilar led off with a ball to the wall before pinch runner Kerrie Kortmann scored on a line drive down the line from Rochelle Christman.
The Minutewomen retook the lead an inning later when Lindsey Webster reached on a throwing error and moved to second when the ball got away from first baseman Deanne Stinner. She scored from third on Samantha Gray's bloop single into right-center. UMass put two runners in scoring position with one out but were unable to add to the lead.
SJU again tied things up with an unearned run in the home-half of the sixth. Nicole Palase doubled to right and scored when UMass second baseman Taylor Carbone had a ground ball on a potential third out go off her glove and into center field.
That's the way things stood for the next three innings before SJU won it in the tenth. After a leadoff hit and a sacrifice, the Hawks loaded the bases with a single and a walk, setting up Palase's fielder?s choice grounder to short. The ensuing throw home was off target as the ball caromed off Gray's glove at home, allowing the winning run to score.
UMass will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at Temple. First pitch is at Noon at the Temple-Ambler campus.
