STORRS, Conn. - Stephanie Mayne hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, and thanks to a 3-strikeout three-hitter pitched by Sara Plourde, it was all the scoring that was need as UMass softball (18-14) defeated Connecticut (17-20), 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The Huskies led off the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles, but Plourde struck out three in a row to end the game and extend the Minutewomen's winning streak to nine games.
Lindsey Webster led off the third inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and after a ground out, Mayne crushed the 0-2 pitch by UConn starter Ali Adelman over the right-center field fence for her fourth home run of the season. It was the junior's 11th and 12th RBIs of the season.
Webster reach base in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a runs scored.
Teea Rogers went 2-for-3 at the plate, leading UMass' 7-8-9 hitters that finished the day a combined 4-for-8. Jordan Storro was 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch and Cyndil Matthew was 1-for-3.
UMass finished with eight hits on the day, but left 10 runners on base, including stranding the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings.
Plourde (15-10) struck out seven out of the first nine batters she faced, and a second inning single by Amy Vaughn was UConn's lone base-runner until the seventh inning. Plourde, who entered the week leading the nation with 12.2 strikeouts per seven innings, finished with 13 Ks, giving her 312 for the season.
Jennifer Ward's infield single and Amy Deluca's single to left put the tying run on base for the Huskies with no outs in the seventh, but Plourde recorded strikeouts 11, 12, and 13 to close out the game and her eighth shutout of the season.
The Minutewomen begin a 12-game homestand on Thursday when they host Fairfield in a 5 p.m. game at the UMass Softball Complex.
