UMass Tops Fairfield, 1-0, Winning Streak At 10

AMHERST, Mass. - Sara Plourde threw a two-hit shutout and struck out 12 batters to lead UMass softball (19-14) to a 1-0 victory over Fairfield (20-16), running the Minutewomen's winning streak to 10 games, on a blustery Thursday afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex that saw wind chills in the 30s and gusts over 40 miles per hour. Stephanie Mix scored the lone run of the game on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Plourde (17-10) and Fairfield's Sarah Minice (10-7) locked up in a pitching duel for the entire game. Plourde allowed just two hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts, including six in a row, while Minice surrendered one unearned run on five hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.
The Minutewomen are now a perfect 7-0 at home this season and Plourde has not allowed an earned run at the UMass Softball Complex in 38 2/3 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .033 against the junior right-hander at home.
Meghan Carta reached on an error with one out in the fourth inning. Mix entered to pinch run, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Jordan Storro, and scored on a wild pitch by Minice with Cyndil Matthew batting.
The Minutewomen play the second and third games of their 12-game homestand on Friday when they host Syracuse in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the UMass Softball Complex.
