Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Tenaya Tucker's two-out single with the bases loaded drove in the winning run as UMass softball (7-12, 1-1 A-10) fell to Charlotte (14-13, 1-1 A-10), 3-2 in 14 innings on Saturday afternoon at the D.L. Phillips Complex. After the teams exchanged leads twice, pitchers Sara Plourde and Katy Hackett put zeroes up for both sides for seven straight innings. It was the second-longest game in UMass program history.

After back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the 14th, Plourde got a strikeout and a pop-out before issuing one more walk to load the bases for Tucker, who in her seventh plate appearance of the game, singled through the left side to bring in the winning run.

The only longer game in UMass history was the epic 15-inning 6-1 loss to Washington in the NCAA Regional at the UMass Softball Complex on May 17, 2009.

The loss is UMass' first to a regular-season Atlantic 10 opponent since falling to Fordham, 5-4 on May 3, 2009 at home, a span of 19 games.

Plourde (7-9) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and seven walks and struck out 12 in 13 2/3 innings pitched. Hackett (10-7) went all 14 innings for Charlotte, allowing two runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out 13.

Teea Rogers had three of UMass' seven hits in the game, going 3-for-6.

Charlotte tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Jalisa Rock's two-out single that scored Bri Gwaltney after she doubled.

UMass took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Meghan Carta doubled right-center to drive in Kyllie Magill and later scored herself on a passed ball.

The 49ers took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning Kalie Lang singled to drive in Gwaltney, who had reached on an error.

UMass left 11 runners on base and Charlotte stranded 13, eight of which were in extra innings.

The Minutewomen travel to the Philadelphia area next weekend to face Temple on Friday at 3 p.m., the Owls again on Saturday at noon, and then a doubleheader on Sunday against Saint Joseph's at noon.
