AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team extended its winning streak to 16 games with a doubleheader sweep of Temple, 3-1 and 5-3, this afternoon at the UMass Softball Complex. The wins improve UMass to 22-9 on the year, and 8-0 in the Atlantic 10. Temple drops to 6-20 with the two losses, and 1-7 in the conference.
Junior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) provided all the offense the Minutewomen would need in game one as she hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning for the 3-1 victory. It was Wheeler's fourth round tripper of the year. Senior Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, Calif.) was 2-for-2 in the game, while sophomore Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) had a single and scored a run.
Junior Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) went the distance on the mound for UMass, scattering four hits while striking out six to get the win (6-5).
In game two, UMass went up 4-0 after three innings and held off a late Temple rally to get the 5-3 win. Sophomore Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) was the offensive force, as she went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. Classmate Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while sophomore Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) smacked her second home run of the year.
Holtz also picked up her 10th win of the year on the mound against only one loss. She allowed six hits and struck out six while walking two batters.
UMass concludes its three-game series with Temple tomorrow afternoon with a 12:00 p.m. game at the UMass Softball Complex.
