AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored as the University of Massachusetts defeated Temple, 6-1, this afternoon in Atlantic 10 softball action. The win extends UMass' win streak to 17 games and improves their record to 23-9 on the year and 9-0 in the conference. Temple falls to 16-21 with the loss and 1-8 in the A-10.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Minutewomen responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach. Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC), Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, Calif.) and Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) each hit consecutive run-scoring singles in the inning, while Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif) smacked an RBI double.
UMass added single runs in the second and sixth innings to preserve the win. Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) pitched five innings in relief of Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) to earn her seventh win of the year (7-5). The two hurlers combined to allow five hits and strike out six in the game.
UMass returns to action on Monday, April 16, when it hosts conference foe St. Joseph's at the UMass Softball Complex. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
