Softball Drops Two On The Road

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The University of Massachusetts softball team fell to Kansas (4-1) and Arizona State (5-1), this afternoon in the first day of the Lead Off Classic in Atlanta, Ga. UMass is now 3-4 on the season.
In the 4-1 loss to Kansas, UMass was held to three hits by Kansas pitcher Kara Pierce. The Minutewomen scored their lone run of the game when freshman catcher Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz) singled in sophomore Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) who led of the inning with a double.
UMass junior pitcher Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) had four strikeouts, giving up seven hits and four earned runs.
In the second game, the Minutewomen fell to Arizona State, 5-1. UMass jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Cahalan scored on an error. She had reached base on a walk. The Sun Devils scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. The Minutewomen were held to just three hits.
UMass sophomore pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) recorded two strikeouts, while allowing nine hits and five earned runs.
The tournament will continue through Sunday, Feb. 25.
