Softball Falls To Alabama, 6-3

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Alabama scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning, and added another in the sixth as they topped the University of Massachusetts softball team, 6-3, today at the Leadoff Classic.
Sophomore Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.), junior Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.), and sophomore Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) each belted solo homeruns for the Minutewomen.
UMass took a 2-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning, but Alabama sent nine batters to the plate and five of them scored.
UMass senior pitcher Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) went the distance, allowing nine hits and surrendering six runs, four of them unearned. She struck out five batters.
The Minutewomen will return to action March 9-11, when they participate in the Speedline Tournament in Tampa, Fla. where they will face Hofstra, Florida Atlantic, Kansas, Tennessee-Chattanooga, and Wisconsin.
