TAMPA, Fla. - Freshman Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, B.C.) struck out eight UIC batters while walking only one, leading UMass to a 4-2 win over No. 19 University of Illinois - Chicago. The Minutewomen improved to 5-13 with the win, with the Flames dropping to 22-14 on the season.

The Minutewomen scored two unearned runs in the top of the first off of two UIC errors. Both Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) reached on infield throwing errors to start off the inning. Bakken scored on an errant throw by the UIC third baseman on a Rooney ground ball with nobody out. With Rooney on third with one out, sophomore Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) hit a grounder to the shortstop and Rooney beat the throw to the plate for the second UMass run.

After UIC scored cut the lead to one in the bottom of the third, UMass came back with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Kiley Scofield (Murietta, Calif.) singled in Wheeler, putting the Minutewomen up 3-1. Freshman Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) followed with a two-out double, scoring senior Nikki Faessler (Milford, Mass.) before scofield was thrown out at third base.

Holtz allowed just one hit over the next three innings, ensuring the win for the Minutewomen and improving to 3-3 on the season. Samantha Iuli took the loss for the Flames, dropping to 12-7 on the year.

Sophomore Teri Rooney drove in four runs, forcing UIC into extra innings before the Flames downed the Minutewomen 7-5 in the nightcap of the doubleheader. The Minutewomen dropped to 5-14 on the season with the loss, while the Flames improved to 23-14.

The Flames pounded out seven hits over the first three innings and capitalized on a costly UMass error in the top of the first with two outs, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings.

The Minutewomen responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Rooney cleared the bases with a two-run triple to the right-center gap, scoring freshman Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) and Bakken, who both singled to start the inning.

Rooney led another UMass ralley in the bottom of the fifth. After a leadoff double by junior Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, Calif.), Bakken singled for the third straight at-bat and Rooney followed with a two-run single, knotting the game at four apiece.

TheFlames put together three straight hits in the top of the eighth inning with two out, scoring three runs. UMass could only put one run across in the eight, losing 7-5.

Holtz took the loss in relief for the Minutewomen, giving up three runs in three innings of work. Rory Gonzales-Gould picked up the win, improving to 10-7 on the year.
