TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - UMass starter Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) gave up five runs in the first inning off three hits and two errors, giving Florida A&M a lead the Minutemen couldn't recover from in a 9-5 loss on Friday in the Lady Seminole Classic. The Minutewomen dropped to 7-15 with the loss.

FAMU used five hits and two UMass errors in the bottom of the second to build a 5-0 lead off Jeffries. The Minutemen came back in the fourth with a two-run double by sophomore Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.).

UMass scored two more in the fifth. Sophomore Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) singled in Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) for one of her three hits in the game. Senior catcher Nikki Faessler (Milford, Mass.) followed with a double, scoring Wheeler on the play.

FAMU scored four more runs in the sixth inning off five hits. The Minutewomen rallied with three hits and a run in the seventh, but it was too little too late.

UMass will return to action tomorrow morning at 10:00 to take on Michigan in Tallahassee.
