TAMPA, Fla. - Junior outfieler Kiley Scofield (Murietta, Calif.) hit a double off the left-center field fence in the top of the fourth inning, driving in UMass' only run of the game in a 4-1 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday morning in the Speedline Invitational. UMass drops to 4-12 on the season, while MSU improves to 16-6 this year.

Mississippi State scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jenny Henke singled off of UMass' hurler Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) with one out. Kellie Wilkerson walked and then advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by second baseman Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) attempting to start a double play, scoring Henke. Jennifer Nelson singled with two outs, scoring Wilkerson from third.

UMass cut the MSU lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) singled to lead off the fourth inning. Freshman Kerri Landers (Berkley, Mass.) pinch ran for Cross, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.). Senior Nikki Faessler (Milford, Mass.) followed with a single, then Scofield knocked a double off the left-center fence, scoring Landers from third.

Mississippi State scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, then added another in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit double by Nichole Henry.

Jeffries took the loss for the Minutewomen, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and striking out four. She drops to 1-5 on the season. Nelson earned the win for MSU, giving up one run on six hits in seven innings of work.

UMass finished third in pool play, advancing to the single-elimination tournament beginning this evening at 5:00 p.m. An opponent will be determined later this afternoon after the completion of pool-play.
