Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Clips Hawks, 14-12, On Senior Day

April 04, 2026 | Men's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – In a back-and-forth matchup that featured 10 ties and four lead changes, a behind the back score from senior Aiden Drunsic put Massachusetts in front for good as the squad pulled out a 14-12 victory over Saint Joseph's at Garber Field on Saturday. With the win, UMass improves to 9-3 overall, 2-2 in Atlantic 10 action, while the Hawks fall to 5-4 and 2-2 in conference action.

Junior Charles Kurtz led all scorers with a career high five goal performance, while Drunsic followed for the Gorillas with two goals and two assists for four points. Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson added a hat trick, senior Brian Jackman chipped in a pair of tallies and juniors Michael Finnerty and Matthew Cargiulo had two assists apiece. Senior Zach Auble contributed two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

For Saint Joseph's, Collin Campbell totaled four points on three goals and an assist, Carter Truesdell had a goal and three assists for four points, Ben Dutton posted a hat trick and Trae Ika logged two goals and an assist.

Johnson and Drunsic gave UMass an early 2-0 advantage in the first quarter as the teams scored at a breakneck pace over the opening five minutes with five goals in that span.

Jack Fiordalis capped a 3-0 Hawks run at the 5:20 mark of the opening frame, the lone stretch of more than two consecutive goals by either squad in the contest, which gave Saint Joseph's its first lead at 4-3.

The Gorillas added the next two tallies before Campbell pulled the Hawks level at 5-5 after one. The teams traded goals twice in the second quarter to head to the intermission deadlocked at seven.

Goals from Johnson and Jackman sandwiched a pair of Saint Joseph's scores in the third, then Johnson completed his hat trick with 1:50 on the clock to put UMass on top 10-9.

Though the Hawks pulled level with the Gorillas three more times in the fourth, Massachusetts did not trail again in the contest. Campbell netted a man-up tally for Saint Joseph's to open the fourth quarter scoring, but Kurtz was quick to respond with his fourth of the day, regaining the lead for UMass, 11-10.
After Colby Wodd added the Hawks 11th goal at the 10:01 mark, Finnerty set up a wide-open Jack Turowsky to put the Gorillas back on top. Saint Joseph's  responded just 34 seconds later, bringing the score back to level at 12-12.

With the score tied at 12 and the shot clock winding down, Drunsic drove from behind the cage and flung a no-look shot over his shoulder past Charlie Giachetti with 3:02 remaining in the contest.

Kurtz added insurance for the Gorillas with 1:45 to play off a dish from Finnerty.

Saint Joseph's ended the matchup with a 47-41 edge in shots and went 1-for-5 in extra man opportunities, while UMass was 0-for-1.

Sophomore Owen Salanger finished with 16 saves for the Gorillas and Tommy Gross and Giachetti split time between the pipes for the Hawks, recording three and seven stops, respectively.

UMass will be back in action next Saturday, April 11, when the squad will close out its home schedule against Delaware at 2 p.m. on Garber Field.
