Softball Falls 3-0 To Western Michigan

AMHERST, Mass — The University of Massachusetts softball team (10-20, 2-8 MAC) fell to Western Michigan (17-15, 6-4 MAC) 3-0 in the first game of a three series matchup on Friday. The Bronco's allowed just three hits on the afternoon.
Lillie Scheivert, Riley Kairer and Katharine Helsin each recorded hits for the Minutewomen, with Scheivert hitting a double. Riain Keefe and Lily Woodworth each worked walks in the contest.
Western Michigan opened the game with a quick start, loading the bases after the first three batters reached on a walk, single and hit by pitch. Bronco's Jordan Smith singled down the left field line to plate two, taking a quick 2-0 lead. A double two batters later scored smith and gave Western Michigan a 3-0 advantage.
The Minutewomen offense woke up in the bottom of the second, as Scheivert roped a double to left center, and Kairer beating out an infield single two batters later.
UMass was unable to capitalize, as a strikeout and fly out stranded two, keeping the contest at 3-0 in favor of WMU.
From the bottom of the third until the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Streicher and Ava Geyer entered a pitchers dual, with neither surrendering a hit over the span. Katharine Heslin broke the streak in the bottom of the seventh, slapping a single through the middle in a two-out pinch-hit appearance.
A flyout in the succeeding at bat ended the contest 3-0.
Streicher (5-9) picked up the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing three runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Geyer (6-4) earned the win for the Bronco's recording a shutout victory and allowing just two hits and two walks while fanning six.
The Minutewomen return to action for a doubleheader against Western Michigan Saturday with the first game starting at 9 a.m.
