April 14, 2026 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts softball team (15-24) bested Brown University (11-20) 2-1, in a warm spring game on Sortino Field. Kelsey Blanchette returned to form in the circle and timely hitting was all the Minutewomen needed.
Blanchette allowed just one run on four hits to pick up her ninth win of the season.
Angie Rama led the offensive unit with two hits, registering her first multi-hit game of the season. Brooke Musch, Lily Woodworth, and Katharine Heslin each recorded hits for the Minutewomen, with Heslin knocking in the two runs.
The game opened in a pitchers duel, with neither team recording a hit, and only two batters reaching base by way of walks.
In the top of the third, Brown struck first, as after a leadoff triple down the left field line, Bears Alyssa Villarde singled through the middle to break the stalemate. Blanchette retired the next three batters, limiting the damage to just 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, UMass responded. With two outs, Woodworth hit a single over short stop. Tiegan Walsh drew a walk, and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Heslin hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop, which got through into the outfield, deep enough to score both runners and take a 2-1 advantage.
Blanchette retired the next six batters she faced, before letting up an infield single. It was the last runner the Bears put on base, as three consecutive outs on three pitches ended the inning and the game.
Blanchette (4-9) picked up the win for UMass, allowing one run on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Macy Borowski (9-9) was handed the loss for Brown, allowing two runs on four hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
The Minutewomen return to action to face Akron in a three game series starting on Friday at Sortino Field.
