April 17, 2026 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts softball team (15-25, 6-13 MAC) fell to conference heavyweight Akron (25-20, 16-3 MAC), 3-2, in the first game of a three contest series. The Minutewomen made a late charge, but it was ultimately too late.
Despite the loss, Hannah Streicher continued to deal on the mound, allowing just three runs on eight hits and striking out four. Streicher has recorded three runs or less in three consecutive starts, and in nine of her last 10.
Lily Woodworth led the offensive unit with two hard hit singles and an RBI. Tiegan Walsh, Riain Keefe and Odyssey Torres recorded hits for UMass, with Keefe adding the second RBI.
Akron opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, as after the leadoff runner reached on an error, a double plated one and gave Akron a 1-0 advantage. Two batters later, a perfectly executed bunt scored a runner from second on the throw, giving the Zips a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Torres singled to left field to break up Madie Jamrogs no hitter, who had retired 10 of 11 batters to that point. A throwing error by Akron's infield put two runners on base, and a Woodworth single through the middle plated one, to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, Akron responded with a run of its own, after three singles in four batters. The Zips took a 3-1 lead.
Massachusetts struck back in the bottom half of the fifth frame. Walsh singled through the infield to lead off the inning, and Grace Colucci walked in the following at bat. Keefe hit a single to shallow left field to score Walsh from second and bring the score to 3-2.
In the sixth and seventh frames, Streicher allowed just one hit, retiring six of seven batters.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Minutewomen showed life, working consecutive two-out walks, before a fielders choice ended the game.
Streicher (9-11) was handed the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, one walk and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Madie Jamrog (10-5) picked up the win for Akron, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Macy Walters picked up a save, recording no hits, three walks and one strikeout in 1.2 innings.
The Minutewomen return to action for a doubleheader to finish the three game series, starting at noon.
