March 07, 2026 | Men's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 18/19 Massachusetts men's lacrosse rallied in the fourth quarter to edge Vermont, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. With the win, the Gorillas improve to 7-1, while the Catamounts fall to 2-3 to start the season.

Sophomore Robbie Granara led UMass with four points, posting his third hat trick of the season and adding an assist. His classmate, Jack Turowsky, chipped in with four points as well on a goal and three assists. Junior Charles Kurtz scored twice and Tyler Clayton had a goal and an assist. Senior Zach Auble bolstered the Gorillas' defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Sean Stevens opened the scoring for UVM at the 7:26 mark of the first quarter only to be answered by UMass just 1:14 later. Granara found Clayton alone in front for the finish into an open cage.

The Gorillas began the second quarter with three straight tallies to stretch the lead to 4-1, but the Catamounts netted two in the final 90 seconds of the half to close the gap to one.

After Tristan Whitaker leveled the score at 4-4 for UVM at the 10:33 mark of the third, the Catamounts pulled in front with 3:32 to play in the frame as Max Frattaroli converted on the extra man opportunity.

Granara came through with the tying goal for UMass with 13:22 left in the fourth before Kurtz picked a corner for the go-ahead goal 1:12 later.

Turowsky gave the Gorillas some breathing room with a man-up tally at 5:52 before Cullen Decker brought Vermont back to within one with 1:06 to play.

The Catamounts won the ensuing faceoff and held for the last shot but were denied by Owen Salanger who made his 10th stop of the day at the buzzer. Ryan Daly ended the contest with 13 saves for Vermont.

UMass finished with a 30-25 shot advantage, while UVM led in ground balls 27-16. The Gorillas were perfect on the clear game on the day, going 18-for-18 and converted two of their three extra-man opportunities. The Catamounts went 1-for-2 in man-up situations.

Massachusetts will be back in action on Saturday, March 14, when the squad will open Atlantic 10 play at High Point at 12 p.m.
