#17 Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Falters At High Point, 15-7

HIGH POINT, N.C. – No. 17 University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse played level with High Point through the first 20 minutes of action, but the Panthers closed the opening half with a 6-0 run and went on to defeat UMass, 15-7 on Saturday afternoon at Vert Stadium. The loss leaves the Gorillas at 7-2 overall, 0-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Panthers improve to 2-5, 1-0 in the A-10.
Sophomore Robbie Granara logged a hat trick for UMass and Charles Kurtz had a goal and two assists for three points. Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson also registered a multi-point game with a goal and an assist. Senior Zach Auble registered two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
For High Point, Carson Robins led the offense with four goals while two more Panthers also had four-point afternoons as Justin Wixted had a hat trick and an assist and Ryan Hynes added four points on two goals and two assists. Ian Cann contributed three points on a goal and two assists and Owen Bunten and Magnus Falkiewicz had two goals apiece.
The Panthers opened the scoring at the 13:54 mark of the first with Bunten potting his first of the day and it remained a 1-0 margin until Kurtz netted the first of the day for the Gorillas in the final minute of the frame.
High Point regained the lead just six ticks into the second before back-to-back goals from Jack Turowsky and Granara gave UMass a brief 3-2 edge with 9:57 remaining in the half. However, Hynes netted the equalizer just 41 seconds later to begin the 6-0 stretch for the Panthers.
The teams traded goals twice to open the third then Wixted potted a pair to push the margin to 12-5. UMass could draw no closer the rest of the way.
High Point out-shot the Gorillas 30-20 and went 0-1 in extra man opportunities, while the Gorillas were 0-for-3.
UMass will return to action next Saturday, March 21, when the squad wiil play host to No. 2 Richmond at 12 p.m.
