Morris Breaks Program Record in 18-6 Win at Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. –  Kassidy Morris scored six goals and broke the program's career record for goals in the process, as the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team rolled to an 18-6 win at Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen trailed 3-2 in the first quarter, but outscored the Colonials 16-3 the rest of the way to improve to 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in the MAC.
 
With 9:57 left in the third quarter, Morris scored her fifth goal of the game on a free-position shot to give her 212 career goals, breaking Katie Ferris' previous record of 211. Morris went on to score her sixth of the game just 53 seconds later. Over her last two games, Morris has 13 goals. She is up to 22 goals and seven assists over her last four contests.
 
Dylan Lyons also posted four goals and two assists, with Ava Connaughton tallying a goal and three assists. Caitlyn Naughton added two goals and an assist.
 
Defensively, Marisa Gatz had four groundballs and a career-high three caused turnovers. Bridget Valentine had three groundballs, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Cate Marshall tallied a team-high 10 draw controls.
 
After UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Robert Morris answered with three straight to take a 3-2 advantage with 3:34 left in the first quarter.
 
The Minutewomen responded with five straight goals, two of which came from Morris. A Katie Onderdonk goal with 10:51 left in the second quarter gave UMass a 7-3 advantage.
 
From there, the Massachusetts lead continued to increase. A Lyons goal gave the Minutewomen a 10-5 halftime advantage. After Robert Morris pulled within 11-6 early in the third quarter, UMass scored seven unanswered goals. The first was Morris' record-breaker with 12:04 left in the third.
 
The fourth quarter saw UMass hold a 3-0 edge, with goals from Molly Bruner (at the 7:27 mark), Katie Peterson (at 4:40) and Lyons (at 0:46).
 
Final shots were 37-17 in favor of UMass, with the Minutewomen holding a 17-8 edge in draw controls. UMass was a perfect 17-of-17 on clears. Bayley Duffy made six saves for the Minutewomen.
 
UMass returns home for three straight games, beginning on Wednesday when the Minutewomen host Bryant at 3 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
