UMass Women’s Lacrosse Opens 2026 With Convincing Win Over Holy Cross, 17-8

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse outscored Holy Cross 10-2 in the middle two quarters to carry the squad to a convincing 17-8 win at Garber Field on Friday afternoon. UMass opens the season at 1-0, while the Crusaders fall to 0-1.
Kassidy Morris led the Maroon & White with a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists. Katie Peterson followed with eight points, posting a hat trick and five helpers. Lil Hancock chipped in three points (2g, 1a) and Katie Onderdonk scored twice for UMass. Hadley Cepiel led Holy Cross with four points on three goals and an assist.
Cepiel opened the scoring at the 12:22 mark to put the Crusaders out in front briefly until Morris responded with the first Massachusetts goal of the season, set up by Peterson 60 seconds later to begin a three-goal run for UMass.
Back-to-back tallies for Holy Cross at 7:49 and 6:46 knotted things up at 3-3 before Hancock closed the opening quarter scoring with a woman-up goal at 4:47 for a 4-3 edge at the period break.
Hancock's first of the day began an 11-1 run for UMass that lasted into the third quarter as Massachusetts led 14-4 with 6:28 remaining in the frame. The Crusaders scored with 2:33 remaining to bring the deficit back to within single digits before the teams played a level fourth quarter with three goals apiece.
UMass finished with a 36-22 advantage in shots and collected 12 ground balls to Holy Cross' 11.
Massachusetts will be back in action on Wednesday, February 11, when the squad will travel to Penn State for a noon matchup.
