Second Half Surge Helps Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Down No. 20 UAlbany, 15-9

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse and No. 20 UAlbany sat tied at five through the opening half before the Gorillas outscored the Great Danes coming out of the intermission, 10-4, en route to a 15-9 victory at Garber Field on Saturday. The win moves UMass to 5-1 on the year and marked the 600th in program history, while UAlbany drops to 1-3.

Freshman Colin Coyle and sophomore Robbie Granara paced the Gorillas offensively, each logging five points with a hat trick and two assists apiece. Junior Charles Kurtz and (2g, 2a) and sophomore Tyler Clayton (2g, 2a) both added four points and freshman Thomas Bagnall followed with three points on two goals and an assist. Defensively for UMass, senior Zach Auble grabbed a team-best six ground balls and sophomore Ryan Mourad registered four caused turnovers.

Silas Richmond was the lone Great Dane to post multiple points on the afternoon with two goals and two assists. Austin Oppenheim corralled 10 ground balls and won 15 faceoffs (15-for-25).

In a tightly-contested opening quarter, Coyle opened the scoring at the 6:55 mark before UAlbany responded with the next two, including a man-up goal on their first opportunity of the contest. Dylan Johnson began a three-goal run for the Gorillas with 2:47 to go in the first that stretched into the second quarter, only for UAlbany to counter with the next three straight. Granara then capped the half with his first of the game at the 2:45 mark, leveling the score at 5-5.

Clayton and Richmond traded goals 59 seconds apart early in the third before UMass broke the game open with a 9-1 run that stretched from the 10:25 mark in the third quarter until 6:16 to go in the fourth. The Great Danes netted the final two tallies of the contest with under four minutes to play.

UAlbany finished with a narrow 33-31 margin in shots, while the Gorillas grabbed 29 ground balls to the Great Danes' 25. UAlbany went 2-for-2 on extra man opportunities and Massachusetts was 1-for-3.

Sophomore Goalkeeper Owen Salanger totaled 17 saves for UMass and Brady Smith turned aside seven in the cage for the Great Danes.

The Gorillas will be back in action on Tuesday, March 3, when the squad will play host to UMass Lowell on Garber Field at 3 p.m.
