Salanger Backstops Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse To 11-8 Win At Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse sophomore goalkeeper Owen Salanger totaled 23 saves, backstopping the Gorillas to a 11-8 come-from-behind victory at Brown on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the squad's fourth straight, UMass improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-1.
Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson led the way for the Maroon & White offensively with a career high four goals. Junior Charles Kurtz had his third hat trick of the season, while sophomore Robbie Granara netted a pair. Sophomore Jack Turowsky and freshman Colin Coyle chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore Tyler Clayton contributed an assist and a career-best three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Senior Zach Auble grabbed five ground balls as well, to go along with a caused turnover.
Just two individuals posted double-digit point totals for Brown, Brady O'Kane with four on two goals and two assists and Jeremy Hopsicker with three goals.
Through the first 12 minutes of action, four different goal scorers helped the Bears to a 4-1 advantage. Johnson then scored in the final minute of the opening frame, beginning a 8-1 run for the Gorillas that stretched until the 5:36 mark of the fourth quarter.
Preston Evans responded at the 5:17 mark for Brown to cut the deficit to three, but the squad would draw no closer as the teams traded goals for the remainder of the contest.
The Bears ended the afternoon with a 45-38 advantage in shots and collected 31 ground balls to UMass' 27. The Gorillas man down defense had a stellar performance on the day, going 5-for-5 and killing off a pair of 2-man advantage situations.
Salanger's 23 stops were the most by a UMass goalkeeper in at least 20 years, while Connor Foley logged 16 saves for Brown.
The Gorillas will be back in action this Saturday, February 28, when the squad will play host to No. 20 UAlbany on Garber Field for a noon contest that will be broadcast on NESN.
