Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Rallies Past NJIT, 18-14

NEWARK, N.J. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to post its third straight win, 18-14 over NJIT on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Gorillas improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Highlanders fall to 2-2.
UMass saw a balanced offensive attack with nine goal scorers on the day, led by sophomore Jack Turowsky's six points on four goals and three assists to go along with two ground balls. Dylan Johnson posted his first collegiate hat trick to extend his point streak to four straight to begin the season. Freshman Thomas Bagnall registered his first career multi-point game with two goals and two assists, while sophomore Robbie Granara added four points (2g, 2a), two ground balls and a caused turnover as well. Sophomore Tyler Clayton logged three points (2g, 1a) and two caused turnovers and freshman Colin Coyle chipped in three points (1g, 2a), a ground ball and a caused turnover. Zach Auble led the defensive effort, matching his career high with four caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls.
For NJIT, Blake Piscitiello had a game-high six points (3g, 3a), Wyatt Viste posted a hat trick and Will Corry collected three points on two goals and an assist.
The Highlanders scored the first three goals of the contest which stood until Granara put UMass on the board with 3:54 to go in the opening frame. Granara added another in the closing seconds of the period from Turowsky to close the gap to one and then Turowsky leveled the score just 14 ticks into the second quarter.
The squads traded tallies until Turowsky began a 4-1 run with 6:17 left in the half.
Coming out of the intermission, the Gorillas rattled off four straight to push their advantage to 13-7 before the Highlanders got one back to end the third.
UMass began the fourth with another 4-1 stretch to build a 16-8 lead before NJIT made a final push in the remaining 8:20 of the contest, ending the game on a 6-2 run.
The Gorillas out-shot the Highlanders, 42-40 and went 1-for-1 in man-up situations and held NJIT to an 0-for-2 day in extra man opportunities.
Massachusetts will next travel to Brown on Tuesday, February 24 for a 3 p.m. matchup in Providence, Rhode Island.
