Balanced Scoring Effort Lifts UMass Women’s Lacrosse Over Vermont, 17-10

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse erased a 4-0 deficit with an 11-goal run to pick up a 17-10 win over Vermont on Garber Field on Saturday. With the win, UMass improves to 2-1 to begin the year, while the Catamounts drop to 1-1.
Six different Minutewomen had multiple goals in the contest, led by Kassidy Morris with four. Dylan Lyons added a hat trick and an assist for four points, as well, and Elizabeth Schafer registered her first collegiate hat trick. Ava Connaughton both chipped in with three points apiece, each on two goals and an assist. Cate Marshall logged 15 draw controls.
Caitlin Haggerty and Jane Trauger provided the majority of the offense for UVM, Haggerty with four points (3g, 1a) and Trauger with three (3g).
The Catamounts sprinted out to a 4-0 advantage in the first 7:39 of the contest with two scores from Trauger and one each from Lauren and Lindsay Lafebvre. At the 6:13 mark of the opening quarter, Lyons put UMass on the board, converting a free position shot and set up Morris 57 seconds later to halve the deficit for the Maroon & White. Morris then completed a hat trick to end the opening quarter and level things at 4-4.
Massachusetts then outscored Vermont 5-0 in the second and added the first three of the third quarter to cap an 11-0 run and build an 11-4 advantage. The Catamounts made a push at a rally with a 4-1 stretch to close the gap to 12-8 but could draw no closer the rest of the way.
UMass out-shot Vermont 32-23 on the afternoon and won 19 draw controls to the Catamounts' 10. The Maroon & White grabbed 14 ground balls to UVM's eight.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Saturday, February 21, at 12 p.m. when the squad travels to Brooklyn, N.Y. to face LIU.
