Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Rolls To 16-8 Victory At Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse never trailed in a convincing 16-8 win at Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon. The victory, the squad's second straight, moves UMass to 2-1 on the year, while the Bobcats fall to 1-2.
The Gorillas had a balanced day offensively with seven individuals combining for the 16 tallies. Colin Coyle led the way with four goals, the first four of his collegiate career and Charles Kurtz registered a hat trick for the second straight game. Robbie Granara (3g, 2a) and Jack Turowsky (2g, 3a) contributed a game-high five points apiece. TJ Casey logged six ground balls and Jimmy Elliot picked up three to go along with two caused turnovers.
Cole Marsala was the lone multi-goal scorer for Quinnipiac, ending the afternoon with five points on two goals and three assists. Nick Meoni had a squad-best four ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Gorillas began the day with a two-goal advantage with junior Matthew Cargiulo scoring just 46 seconds into the contest, while Tyler Clayton added another at 10:39.
Quinnipiac got on the board at the 10:21 mark with a goal from Meoni, but Cargiulo responded with his second of the day, beginning a 7-1 run to close out the half.
The Bobcats began the third quarter with a pair of tallies to close the gap to 9-4, but Coyle and Brian Jackman had the answers for UMass at 10:59 and 8:37. Quinnipiac drew no closer than six the rest of the sway.
The Gorillas finished with a 41-20 advantage in shots and led 33-20 in ground balls. UMass went 2-for-4 in its extra man opportunities, while the Bobcats were 3-for-5.
Goalkeeper Owen Salanger finished with nine saves for the Maroon & White, while Mason Oak turned aside 12 shots for Quinnipiac.
The Gorillas will next travel to Newark, N.J. to take on NJIT on Saturday, February 21 at 1:30 p.m.
