#19/18 Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Falls At #11 Richmond, 14-5

RICHMOND, Va. – No. #19/18 University of Massachusetts dropped its first road game of the season, falling to No. 11 Richmond, 14-5 on Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium. The loss leaves the Gorillas at 9-4 on the year, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Spiders improve to 10-3 and 4-0 in conference action.
Senior Trace Hogan logged a team-high three points on two goals and an assist and freshman Robbie Granara posted two points with a goal and an assist. John Krisch and Caelin Lewis provided the other two tallies of the day for UMass. Senior TJ Casey won 11-of-18 faceoffs and collected four ground balls.
Richmond opened the contest with a 3-0 first quarter before Granara put the Gorillas on the board at the 14:14 mark of the second. However, the Spiders responded with a 6-0 run that pushed the margin to 9-1 early in the third quarter.
UMass managed back-to-back tallies from Hogan and Lewis that brought the score to 9-3 with 7:47 to play in the third, but Richmond went on to outscore the Gorillas 5-2 in the remained of the contest.
Joe Sheridan paced the Spiders' offense with four goals and Max Merklinger added four points on three goals and an assist.
Richmond out-shot UMass, 41-22 and won the ground ball battle, 29-22. The Spiders converted on their one extra-man opportunity, while the Gorillas were 0-for-2.
Freshman Owen Salanger made 12 saves for UMass and his counterpart, Zach Vigue, totaled eight stops for Richmond.
The Gorillas will wrap up the regular season next Friday, April 25, when the squad plays host to Hobart on Garber Field at 5 p.m.
