RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the series finale to Richmond, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field.
UMass falls to 10-19-1 overall on the season and 4-11 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Richmond improves to 24-10 overall with a 7-8 league record.
Carter Hanson, Jared Muñoz, Reece McCarthy and Michael Toth all had one hit apiece. Matt Travisano scored the lone run for the Minutemen, while Marc Willi tallied the RBI.
Massachusetts scored the first run of the game in the first to take an early lead. Back-to-back walks put Travisano and Jack Beverly on second and first, respectively. Hanson singled to right field to load up the bases. Willi was then walked with two outs, allowing Travisano to score.
Richmond tied up the game, 1-1, in the second with an RBI single. The Spiders broke the tie with a solo home run to lead by one run in the fifth. Richmond pushed across another run in the eighth to extend its lead and hold on to the 3-1 win.
Sam Belliveau (0-3) had the loss for UMass, giving up two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out four in five complete innings. Joey Giordano (1-0) received the win for Richmond, going two innings with one hit, one walk and strikeout, while Ryan Bilka earned his second save of the year, pitching 1.2 innings with only two strikeouts recorded.
Massachusetts travels to Fairfield, Connecticut, on Tuesday, April 15 to face Sacred Heart at 3 p.m.
