Sacred Heart knotted the game up at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly in the second, but UMass reclaimed the lead in the third to make it a 2-1 game. Sullivan led off with a single through the left side, before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, McCarthy hit a single to left center field as Sullivan came across the plate for another run.
In the fifth, Beverly hit a double to left center field to start the inning. A ground out aided Beverly to third, before Sullivan blasted a two-run shot to left field, marking his third home run of the year, to extend the Minutemen's lead to 4-1.
With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Willi was walked as Tirado went home to make room to tack on to its lead, 5-1. In the bottom half of the frame, the Pioneers added seven runs to take the lead at 8-5.
