Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Tops Vermont, 11-7, For Fifth-Straight Win

BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse never trailed en route to its fifth consecutive win on Saturday at Vermont, 11-7 at Virtue Field. The Gorillas are now 5-1 to begin the season, while the Catamounts fall to 2-3.
Trace Hogan paced UMass with six points on three goals and three assists to go along with one caused turnover. Freshman Robbie Granara logged a season-best four goals, extending his streak to six straight multi-point games. Junior Brian Jackman contributed a goal and an assist. Zach Auble collected four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
For UVM, Tristan Whitaker had four of the team's seven goals. Cullen Decker and Kean Pare had a goal and an assist apiece.
Jackman opened the scoring at the 11:40 mark of the first and then set up Granara's first of the day with 7:01 remaining to put UMass in front, 2-0. The teams traded goals twice and UVM added the final tally of the frame with four seconds to go to pull within one of the Gorillas at 4-3.
UMass then went on a three-goal run to give the squad some breathing room to begin the second and went to the halftime break up 8-5 after another late score by the Catamounts, coming with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Aiden Drunsic and Hogan netted the first two goals of the third quarter to give the Gorillas their largest lead of the day. Vermont added the next two tallies before Hogan capped the scoring by completing his hat trick in the final minute of the contest.
UMass out-shot UVM, 33-30, while the Catamounts edged the Gorillas in ground balls, 25-22. Owen Salanger has eight saves in net for UMass and Ryan Daly turned aside four shots for Vermont.
The Gorillas will be back in action next Saturday, March 15, when the squad travels to Rutgers for a 12 p.m. matchup.
