#19 Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Battles To 11-7 Victory At Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 19 University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse limited Rutgers to just one second half goal, rallying for an 11-7 win over the Scarlet Knights at SHI Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Gorillas improve to 6-1 and match their longest winning streak since 2019 at six in a row. Rutgers falls to 4-5 on the year following the loss.
Junior Aiden Drunsic led the Gorillas with four goals and sophomore Matthew Cargiulo posted his first collegiate hat trick. Senior Trace Hogan had four points on a goal and three assists, freshman Robbie Granara chipped in three points (2g, 1a) with three ground balls and freshmen Tyler Clayton and Jack Turowsky added a goal and an assist, respectfully.
Cargiulo opened the scoring in the first with a man-up goal from Turowski at the 11:59 mark, but the Scarlet Knights responded with a 4-0 run over 1:33 to build a three-goal cushion. Drunsic then ended the UMass draught with the final goal of the quarter.
Rutgers responded with a tally in the opening minute of the second, before UMass closed the gap to 5-4 with a pair from Cargiulo and Granara. After a nearly 12-minute scoring draught, the Scarlet Knights picked up their sixth goal of the day with 2:18 remaining in the half.
UMass held Rutgers to just one second-half goal as the squad mounted its comeback. Drunsic netted his second and third of the day to level the score at six in the third quarter. Cargiulo then gave the Gorillas their first lead since the opening quarter, beating the buzzer with a shot from midfield into an open Scarlet Knights' cage to end the third.
Rutgers tied things up at 7-7 to begin the fourth, but UMass ended the contest with a 4-0 run, which included three goals in 1:23.
The Gorillas ended the day with a 40-35 advantage in shots, while the Scarlet Knights took the ground ball battle, 18-12. UMass went 3-for-4 in its extra man opportunities, while also going 3-for-3 defending man down.
Freshman goalkeeper Owen Salanger finished the contest with 13 saves and two ground balls. For Rutgers, Cardin Stoller stopped 13 shots.
The Gorillas will be back in action this Tuesday, March 18, traveling to UMass Lowell for a 3 p.m. contest against the River Hawks.
