Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Opens A-10 Play With 11-10 Win At #16/15 Saint Joseph's

March 29, 2025 | Men's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse used a dominant day over the faceoff X to help the squad claim a 11-10 victory over No. 16/15 Saint Joseph's on Saturday in the teams' Atlantic 10 opener. With the win, the Gorillas improve to 8-2 (1-0 A-10), while the Hawks fall to 7-3 (0-1 A-10).

Senior Trace Hogan paced UMass with five points on two goals and three assists and collected three ground balls. Robbie Granara contributed a hat trick, while six more Gorillas had one goal apiece, including Caelin Lewis in his first game of the season. Senior TJ Casey posted an 82.4% winning percentage over X, coming away with 14 of 17 faceoffs he took on the afternoon.

Richie LaCalandra scored four for the Hawks and Mark Watters had a hat trick, accounting for seven of the squad's 10 goals.

With the teams in a defensive deadlock to begin the contest, Charles Kurtz opened the scoring at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter. Saint Joseph's responded with the next two tallies to take its only lead of the day at 2-1 before Hogan put home a rebound to knot things up at 2-2 in the final minute of the frame.

The Gorillas continued a 5-1 run into the second to build a 6-3 advantage, but the Hawks netted the final three goals of the quarter to tie the score at six at the intermission.

UMass came out of halftime and outscored Saint Joseph's 3-1 in the third, with the only tally for the Hawks coming on a man-up opportunity.

Saint Joseph's made a push to rally late with a goal from Jack McCorry at the 28-second mark that pulled the Hawks back within one, but freshman Owen Salanger stood tall after Saint Joseph's won the ensuing faceoff to preserve the win with his 13th save of the day.

The Hawks ended the contest with a 39-36 shot advantage while ground balls were even at 30 apiece. Saint Joseph's went 2-for-4 on extra man opportunities and the Gorillas were 0-for-1. Tommy Gross made 10 saves in net for the Hawks.

UMass will return to action when the squad plays host to High Point next Saturday, April 5, at 3 p.m. on Garber Field.
