Minutewomen Drop Conference Opener to Hawks

March 16, 2025 | Softball

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Massachusetts (5-17, 0-3 A-10) fell short against Saint Joseph's (11-12, 3-0 A-10) this weekend, surrendering a series sweep in heartbreaking fashion. The Hawks made full use of their home field advantage, claiming victory in all three games via walk-offs.

UMass struck first in game one, with Sophia Thormeyer bringing home Brooke Musch on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. Saint Joe's would answer with a three-run home run in the bottom frame to take the lead. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Lydia Castro tied the game with a 2 RBI single as Riley Kairer and Taylor Richardson crossed home plate. The Hawks would show patience at the plate in the final frame, drawing three walks to set up a walk-off single with the bases loaded for Julianne Bolton's only earned run of the contest as UMass dropped the 4-3 decision. Bolton pitched 6.1 innings for the Minutewomen, striking out five batters.

Massachusetts once again got things going first in the scoring column for game two, as Kairer scored on a passed ball and Odyssey Torres brought home Thormeyer in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Saint Joseph's found equalizers in the bottom of the second inning to knot the score at 2-2. Both sides would find their rhythm defensively, logging four-straight combined scoreless innings. The Minutewomen surrendered a walk-off sacrifice fly as the Hawks claimed a 3-2 win. Natalee Horton threw 6.2 innings, striking out three batters.

The Minutewomen would end the weekend trip in a 9 1/2-inning deadlock, with Hannah Streicher striking out five across a career-high 9.1 innings in a workhorse performance. Saint Joe's took an early lead in the bottom of the third via sacrifice fly, answered in the top of the sixth inning when Lydia Castro crossed home off a throwing error. Following the third-inning score by the Hawks, Streicher would throw six-consecutive scoreless innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Riain Keefe made a diving catch in right field to end the inning and strand a runner on base. UMass would run out of gas in the bottom of the 10th, as an RBI single by Saint Joseph's would serve as the walk-off run to claim the 2-1 victory.
