Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Storms Back, Rallying Past UAlbany In Second Half For 10-9 Win

ALBANY, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse overcame a five-goal halftime deficit, outscoring UAlbany 8-2 over the final two quarters to secure a 10-9 come from behind win at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Gorillas have now won four straight and improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Great Danes fall to 1-3.
UMass featured a balanced offensive attack as seven individuals combined for the squad's 10 goals with no one player scoring more than two. Freshman Robbie Granara finished the day with a team-best four points (1g, 3a) to go along with two ground balls and one caused turnover. Senior Trace Hogan and junior Aiden Drunsic each had two goals, an assist and two caused turnovers and Charles Kurtz scored twice. Zach Auble grabbed a team-high six ground balls and dished an assist and TJ Casey went 9 for-17 over X with five ground balls.
The Great Danes opened up the contest by building a 3-0 lead over the first eight minutes of action before Hogan picked up UMass' opening tally at the 2:48 mark from Auble. UAlbany responded by adding two more, including one at the buzzer, to take a 5-1 advantage into the second quarter. Kurtz began the scoring in the second before the Great Danes tacked on a pair for a 7-2 halftime advantage.
Drunsic scored the first two goals in the third followed by a tally from Tyler Clayton to bring UMass back within striking distance heading into the final frame.
Matthew Cargiulo capped a four-goal run for the Gorillas at the 10:57 mark in the fourth as Granara set up a third straight score. Silas Richmond responded on the next possession to give UAlbany back a two-goal cushion before UMass converted on two straight offensive opportunities to knot the score at 8-8 with 8:08 remaining.
Richmond completed his hat trick for the Great Danes at the 6:55 mark, briefly regaining the lead for UAlbany before John Krisch responded for UMass with the equalizer.
Hogan went on to net the game winner for the Gorillas with 1:50 left in the contest, burying a feed from Drunsic to the top right corner of the cage.
The squads finished level in shots at 39 apiece and UMass won the ground ball battle, 33-29. The Gorillas were successful on 18 of 19 clear attempts, while limited UAlbany to a 17-for-24 day.
Freshman goalkeeper Owen Salanger improved to 4-0 on the season with a 13-save effort. Brady Smith made 13 saves for the Great Danes, as well.
UMass will be back in action next Saturday, March 8, when the squad will head to Burlington, Vermont to take on Vermont at noon.
