Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past NJIT, 12-4, For Head Coach Greg Cannella's 250th Career Win

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse blanked NJIT in the first half and rolled to a 12-4 victory over the Highlanders (0-2) for head coach Greg Cannella's 250th career win on Saturday at Garber Field. The win marks the Gorillas' third straight as they move to 3-1 on the season.
Senior Trace Hogan and freshman Robbie Granara each led the way with four points, posting a hat trick and an assist along with two ground balls apiece. Charles Kurtz added three points with a goal and two assists and Zach Auble contributed two points with a goal and an assist. TJ Casey went 8-for-13 over X and corralled five ground balls.
After a defensive standoff to start, UMass broke the deadlock with a tally from Kurtz at the 9:34 mark, followed by a man-up goal from Hogan with one minute to go in the first.
The Gorillas then added three in the second quarter while also making an impressive defensive stand, killing a two man down situation to keep the Highlanders off the board through the first 30 minutes.
UMass expanded its advantage to 8-0 before NJIT ultimately broke up the shutout bid with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Gorillas responded with the next four tallies to lead 12-1 and the Highlanders closed out the contest with the final three tallies of the day.
NJIT ended the day with a 46-38 shot advantage and UMass took the ground ball battle, 25-19. The Gorillas went 1-for-2 in extra man opportunities while going 5-for-5 on kills with a man down and were a perfect 24-for-24 in their clear attempts.
Freshman Owen Salanger started his third straight game in net for the Gorillas and made 13 saves in 53+ minutes before being relieved by Tyler Bluse (two saves) and Ryan Mazzariello (three saves). Cameron Kurdyla had 10 saves for the Highlanders.
UMass will be back in action when the squad travels to UAlbany for its first road game of the season on Saturday, March 1, at 12 p.m.
