February 22, 2025 | Baseball
Andrew Middleton recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts to help the Minutemen to its first win of the year.
Braden Sullivan led the team with two hits, including a double, and two runs, followed by six Minutemen with one hit apiece. Gavin O'Brien and Matt Travisano added one run each. Travisano tallied two RBI with Mitchell Schroeder and Jack Beverly registering one RBI apiece.
After three scoreless innings, Bethune-Cookman got on the board first with an RBI double in the fourth.
A three-run sixth inning for Massachusetts aided the team to a 3-1 lead. O'Brien led off the top of the inning with a single to right field, while Sullivan had a bunt single to advance O'Brien to second. A wild pitch put O'Brien and Sullivan in scoring position, before Travisano singled through the left side to bring home O'Brien and Sullivan. With Schroeder at the plate, Travisano stole second, and an RBI single from Schroeder allowed Travisano to touch home plate to give UMass the 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats tied it up in the bottom half of the sixth with two runs scored. Bethune-Cookman got back within one after a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and a wild pitch scored a Wildcat from third.
The two teams remained knotted up at 3-3 through the final three innings, forcing extras. Sullivan started off the 10th with a double to left center field, before Travisano took his place on first after being hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt from Schroeder moved Sullivan and Travisano to third and second, respectively. Beverly hit a sacrifice fly, as Sullivan tagged up and ran home to put the Minutemen up 4-3.
UMass was able to hold off Bethune-Cookman, as one Wildcat reached base after being walked. Middleton fanned the next two batters to give Massachusetts the 4-3 victory.
Middleton entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, tossing 4.1 innings. The freshman allowed no runs, no hits, walked three and struck out a career-high 11 to receive the win. Callen Powers started on the mound for the Minutemen, pitching four complete innings with two hits, one run, four walks and four strikeouts. Bobby McDonough threw for 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit, two walks and striking out one.
