AMHERST, Mass. - The top-seeded University of Massachusets women's lacrosse team opens Atlantic 10 Championship play against no. 4-seed Saint Joseph's on Friday in Pittsburgh. The Minutewomen and the Hawks begin action at Rooney Field at noon on ESPN+.
The Champs
UMass secured its 13th consecutive A-10 regular season championship and recorded its fifth straight unbeaten campaign in league play with a 13-12 win at Richmond in the regular season finale.
Minutewomen In The A-10 Championship
The Minutewomen last claimed the A-10 Tournament Championship in 2021 after winning eight straight from 2010 to 2017. UMass reached the title game a season ago with a 15-8 win over Davidson in the semifinals before falling to Richmond in the championship game, 20-13.
Series History
Friday's matchup marks the 37th all-time meeting between the Minutewomen and the Hawks dating back to the first contest between the two in 1994. UMass leads the all-time series with a 33-3 record after defeating Saint Joseph's 16-11 on March 16 in Amherst. The teams have matched up five times previous in the A-10 Tournament, with the Hawks winning 15-11 in 2022 while UMass holds a 4-1 postseason series advantage.
Queen Of The Draw
Jordan Dean set a new NCAA Division I single season record with 238 draw controls on the season, passing Maddie Jenner (Duke, 2022) for most in a single season after recording 17 in the win at Richmond. Dean became the second player in UMass program history to eclipse the 400 draw controls in a career and set a new single season program mark in the home finale against George Washington. The junior finished the regular season as the DI leader in draw controls per game at 14.88 and posted double-digit draw controls in 14-of-16 games this season.
Back-To-Back
UMass had three individuals claim back-to-back major Atlantic 10 awards as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon. Fiona McGowan repeated as the league's offensive player of the year for the second consecutive season while Audra Tosone earned back-to-back A-10 Defensive Player of the Year awards. Head coach Jana Drummond also earned her second A-10 Coach of the Year award in as many season.
All-League
The Minutewomen landed four players on the Atlantic 10 First-Team All-Conference squad in Jordan Dean, Fiona McGowan, Kassidy Morris, and Audra Tosone. Layton Nass, Catrina Tobin, and Charlotte Wilmoth represented UMass on the second-team all-league squad while Ava Connaughton and Lil Hancock earned a spot on the A-10 All-Rookie Team. McGowan and Tosone also were tabbed to the league's all-academic squad.
Helping Hand
Fiona McGowan moved into third all-time at UMass in career assists after finishing with seven in in the win over UConn and added an assist against GW to tie Holly Turner's (2018) 51 for second most. McGowan needs just three assists to pass Erika Eipp (2016) for the program record while her 122 career assists is third most all-time. The attacker ranks third among Division I leaders in assists per game with 3.31 and is fifth in total assists with 53. McGowan also ranks fourth all-time in career points at UMass with 239.
Team Rankings
UMass leads Division I teams in draw controls per game heading into postseason play and ranks second nationally in assists per game at 9.50. The Minutewomen averaged 25.25 points per game during the regular season to rank fifth nationally while its 15.75 scoring offense was 12th-best in Division I.
Causin' Problems
Audra Tosone became the second Minutewoman in program history to reach 100 caused turnovers for her career as she finished with a pair in UMass' 20-7 win at Duquesne. The 2023 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year has caused 112 turnovers for her career and is four away from setting a new program record that's currently held by Kristin St. Hilaire's (2002-05) 115. This season, Tosone has nine games with multiple caused turnovers and has 20 in over the last seven contests.
Championship Game
The Atlantic 10 title game is set for Sunday, May 5 against the winner of no. 2-seed Richmond and no. 3 Davidson/no. 6 George Mason.
