UMass Holds On To Defeat Saint Joseph’s, Advances To A-10 Championship Game

Catrina Tobin posted a career-high 14 saves while Skylar Simmonds led the UMass offense with four points on two goals and two assists.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. The top-seeded University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team held on for a 10-9 win over Saint Joseph's on Friday at Rooney Field to advance to Sunday's Atlantic 10 Championship game. Catrina Tobin finished with a career-high 14 saves between the pipes for the Minutewomen while Skylar Simmonds led UMass with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists.
 
Fiona McGowan added three points on two goals and an assist while Charlotte Wilmoth put home two goals on the afternoon.
 
Saint Joseph's scored the game's first goal before UMass responded by scoring seven unanswered to take a 7-1 lead with 3:11 to go in the opening half. McGowan's 28th of the season answered the Hawks goal before Wilmoth picked up her 51st of the campaign to give the Minutewomen their first lead of the day. Tessa Shields found the back of the net with 7:34 to go in the first off a Skylar Simmonds assist for the final goal of the opening frame.
 
Simmonds netted the first two goals of the second quarter, first scoring less than two minutes in off a McGowan assist before going top shelf for her second goal with 8:50 to go in the quarter. Kassidy Morris put home her 59th of the season just over a minute later, tying Katie Ferris for sixth-most in a single season by a Minutewoman. Lauren Tolve capped off the seven-goal run with her 10th of the season before the Hawks answered with two in the final minute of the half to make it a 7-3 contest at the break.
 
Wilmoth scored the lone UMass goal of the third quarter to stretch the UMass lead back to four goals at 8-4 with 10:12 to go before the Hawks scored their first of four straight with 6:39 left. Saint Joseph's posted three straight goals to open up the fourth quarter and tied it at 8-8 with 8:41 to go in the game.
 
Lil Hancock put UMass back up by a goal just under a minute later before the Hawks answered to tie at 9-9 with 5:19 to play. McGowan's second goal of the day proved to be the game-winner with 4:33 left as UMass took a 10-9 lead. Tobin came up with her 13th save of the afternoon with 2:30 to go, stopping Saint Joseph's 13th free position attempt of the afternoon before denying her 14th shot of the game with 15 seconds to go to secure the win.
 
The Minutewomen advance to Sunday's Atlantic 10 Championship at noon and will take on the winner of no. 2 seed Richmond and no. 3-seed Davidson.
