Knote Tabbed Co-Goalkeeper Of The Year As Five Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Student-Athletes Earn Atlantic 10 Postseason Honors

AMHERST, Mass. – Five members of the Massachusetts men's lacrosse program have been honored with postseason Atlantic 10 Men's Lacrosse Awards, which were announced on Wednesday. Leading the way for the Gorillas, graduate student Matt Knote was tabbed Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, was an All-Conference First Team selection and an All-Academic Team honoree. Senior midfielder Shane O'Leary earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team, freshman midfielders Matthew Cargiulo and Blaise New were voted to the All-Rookie Team and senior defenseman Owen Quinn joined Knote on the All-Academic Team.

Knote earns a major conference award for a second straight year after being selected as the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. The Speonk, New York native collects his fourth all-conference recognition after also being named to the CAA First Team in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022 and to the A-10 First Team in 2023.

Knote ended the regular season 18th nationally in save percentage (.545), second in the A-10 and the conference leader in saves per-game at 12.54, good for 19th nationally. He is currently 25th nationally in goals-against average (10.65). The honorable mention Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American and a USA Lacrosse 2024 Division I Preseason All-America Third Team selection moved up to third in program history in career saves this season, now with 733 after posting 11 double-digit save efforts thus far in 2024 to contribute to his total of 166 stops on the season. He will earn his Masters in Business Analytics.
 
O'Leary receives his first career all-conference nod after finishing the regular season as UMass' top point-producing midfielder, good for third on the team in scoring overall with 30 points on 20 goals and 10 assists. The Byfield, Massachusetts native, who was a CAA All-Rookie Team honoree in 2022, has 12 ground balls and five caused turnovers to his credit this year, as well. O'Leary has at least one point in all 13 games thus far this season and put up seven goals and six assists for 13 points over five A-10 games.
 
Cargiulo has appeared in all 13 games in 2024 and has contributed 10 points on eight goals and two assists with three multi-goal efforts, two in Atlantic 10 play, while collecting seven ground balls. New has also seen action in all 13 contests to start his career and has logged 20 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.
 
Owen Quinn, who stepped into a starting role on defense for the Gorillas this season after previously appearing in a total of 13 career games entering 2024, has played in all 13 contests in 2024 and has 18 ground balls and eight caused turnovers in 2024. Quinn has helped UMass to a No. 3 ranking nationally in man-down defense this season (.806), second in the Atlantic 10, and a top-30 spot in scoring defense (27th, 10.77), third in the conference. He is a Dean's List student majoring in Finance.
