April 26, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
HIGH POINT, N.C. – A 6-0 first quarter deficit proved too much for University of Massachusetts to overcome as the squad fell to High Point, 17-10 in the teams' regular season finale on Friday afternoon at Vert Stadium. The Gorillas will head into the Atlantic 10 Tournament as the No. 4 seed with a 3-2 conference record and 6-7 overall, while the Panthers will finish at 3-2 in the A-10 to earn the No. 3 seed and are 9-6 overall on the year.
Mike Tobin, Matthew Cargiulo and Conor Foley all had two goals on the afternoon, while Grant Breyo added a goal and an assist. Freshmen Zack Waxman and Jimmy Elliott both registered their first collegiate points with a goal and an assist, respectively. Tobin added three ground balls and a caused turnover, as well.
With the Panthers leading 6-0 after the first, Foley opened up the scoring for UMass at the 13:21 mark of the second with his 18th goal of the year. High Point responded with a pair before Tobin added the Gorillas' second of the day at 8:29. The teams then traded goals over the remainder of the quarter to bring the score to 9-3 in favor of the Panthers at the break.
After a low-scoring third, O'Leary sparked a four-goal run for UMass to begin the final frame as the Gorillas closed the gap to three with a Tobin tally at 10:54. However, High Point answered with a four-goal run of its own to regain the seven-goal cushion with 7:06 remaining. Waxman's tally at 6:20 and Cargiulo's score at 3:29 were both answered with Panthers' goals to keep the margin at seven.
High Point finished the day with a 41-38 advantage in shots and collected 34 ground balls to UMass' 29. Matt Knote totaled 12 saves in the cage for the Gorillas and Zack Overend made 11 stops for the Panthers.
