Massachusetts Falls To Saint Joseph's In Atlantic 10 Semifinals

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse remained in striking distance from wire-to-wire, but No. 14 Saint Joseph's never trailed in the contest to hand UMass a 11-9 setback in Thursday's Atlantic 10 Semifinal matchup on Garber Field.

With the loss, the Gorillas end the year at 6-8, while the Hawks advance to Saturday's Atlantic 10 championship game with a record of 11-3.

Mike Tobin led the Massachusetts offense with four points as he recorded a hat trick and an assist and added two ground balls. Shane O'Leary contributed two goals and two assists as the only other Gorilla with multiple points on the afternoon. Caleb Hammett went 11-for-21 (52.4%) over X and grabbed a team-best nine ground balls.

For Saint Joseph's, Levin Anderson finished with five points on four goals and an assist in addition to five ground balls. Griffin Mallory added two goals and an assist for three points, Carter Page logged a goal and two assists with four ground balls and Matt Bohmer scored twice.

The Hawks opened the scoring at the 11:50 mark with Mallory's first of the day before Conor Foley responded for UMass with his own unassisted tally at 9:18. Mallory converted once more to give Saint Joseph's a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

A man-up goal for Jesse Jackson started the second quarter scoring for the Hawks before O'Leary and Carter Castillo had back-to-back tallies for the Gorillas at 12:08 and 11:14, respectively, to knot the score at 3-3. Anderson then capped the defensive-minded half with a goal to put Saint Joseph's back up by one at the intermission.

The Hawks began the second half with a pair of goals from Alex Keener and Page for a three-goal run before Mason Bregman broke up the drought for UMass at the 8:57 mark. The teams then traded goals twice before the end of the period as Saint Joseph's took an 8-6 lead into the fourth.

O'Leary's tally at the 13:33 mark of the fourth made it two straight for the Gorillas, closing the gap to 8-7, before the Hawks quelled the rally with a 3-1 run. Tobin added the final score of the day on a man-up opportunity for UMass with 24 seconds remaining.

Saint Joseph's finished with a 48-34 advantage in shots and the Gorillas edged the Hawks in the ground ball battle, 39-38. UMass went 1-for-3 on EMO and Saint Joseph's was 1-for-2.
Matt Knote matched his season-high total with 19 saves and Tommy Gross had 11 stops for the Hawks.
