April 20, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – In a game of runs, University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse's fourth quarter rally came up just short in a 14-12 setback to No. 15/14 Richmond on Saturday at Garber Field. The loss leaves the Gorillas at 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Spiders improve to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in conference action.

Mason Bregman scored a game-best five goals and paced the UMass offense with six points, both career highs for the senior, as four of his tallies came in the second quarter. Mike Tobin contributed five points on two goals and three assists, Shane O'Leary added two goals and two assists for four points and Conor Foley logged three points (2g, 1a). Caleb Hammett won 14-of-28 faceoffs (50%) and picked up three ground balls, Jack Wittmaack grabbed two caused turnovers and five ground balls and Zach Auble contributed four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

For Richmond, Dalton Young led the attack with six points on two goals and four assists, while Lance Madonna and Aidan O'Neil had hat tricks. Luke Grayum and Lukas Olsson scored two goals apiece. Jared Chenoy collected six ground balls and won 15-of-27 faceoffs.

The Spiders opened the contest with the first two tallies of the day before Tobin put UMass on the board with his 19th of the season from Caelin Lewis at the 6:41 mark of the opening quarter. Richmond countered with a pair of scores to hold a 4-1 edge heading into the second quarter.

Tobin then set up the first two goals of the second, sparking a 6-1 run for the Gorillas. Bregman finished off the play on Tobin's second helper of the day and then found the back of the net three more times before the intermission for a four-goal quarter that helped put UMass on top, 7-5 at the break.

The Spiders recovered in the second half with a 6-0 run before Bregman snapped the Gorillas' scoring drought with his fifth of the day with 6:42 remaining in the third. Madonna capped the third with another for Richmond to push the Spiders' lead to 12-8 heading into the final frame.

O'Leary closed the gap to 12-9 with the opening goal of the fourth only for Richmond to counter 90 seconds later. Another tally for the Spiders widened the gap to 14-9 with 11:15 remaining.
UMass made one last push at a rally with under three minutes to go. Dillon Arrant scored with 2:13 remaining and Foley followed with another at the 1:26 mark before Tobin's tally from Bregman brought the Gorillas within two with 57 seconds remaining. UMass won the ensuing faceoff, but Zach Vigue came up with a save on Auble's shot with 33 seconds left to seal the result.

The Gorillas edged the Spiders in shots, 40-39, while Richmond took the ground ball battle, 38-32. Matt Knote made 12 saves in the cage for UMass and Vigue finished with 13 for the Spiders.
