Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Storms Back For 13-12 Win At Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse erased a six-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to open Atlantic 10 play with a 13-12 win over Hobart on Saturday at Boswell Field. With the victory, the Gorillas improve to 5-4 (1-0 A-10), while the Statesmen fall to 3-6 (0-1) A-10.

Conor Foley led UMass' attack with a career-high five goals, while Mike Tobin had a hat trick, which including the game-tying and game-winning goal with less than two minutes to go. Shane O'Leary contributed two goals and an assist and Mason Bregman scored twice, as well. Caleb Hammett won 12 of 27 faceoffs and grabbed six ground balls, Zach Auble had five ground balls and Jack Wittmaack logged four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

For Hobart, Will Delano had a team-high five points (2g, 3a) and Chris Patterson notched four goals. Adam Shea won 11 of 17 faceoffs and totaled eight ground balls.
In a defensive-minded opening quarter, Foley and Bregman gave the Gorillas a 2-0 advantage, scoring at 4:14 and 3:34, respectively, before Patterson ended the frame by putting Hobart on the board.

After the Statesmen began the second by tying the score at two, before the teams traded goals twice over the next six minutes. Patterson's tally with 7:34 on the clock sparked a 7-0 run for Hobart that Delano capped at the 3:08 mark of the third quarter.

Trailing by six in the final frame, UMass out-scored the Statesmen 9-2 over the final 14:34 of the contest. Tobin began the rally and two goals from Foley closed the gap to 10-7 at the 9:57 mark before Chad Bach pushed Hobart's lead back to four at 11-7.

The Gorillas responded with goals from Breyo, Foley and O'Leary to trim the deficit to one at 11-10. Troy Barhelme briefly gave the Statesmen back a two-goal cushion with 3:31 remaining, but Massachusetts countered with a tally from Foley 59 seconds later. Tobin then tied the score at 12 at the 1:53 mark and followed with a rocket for the deciding tally
with 50 seconds on the clock.

Hobart finished with a 54-38 advantage in shots and were 1-for-3 with the extra man, while the Gorillas were 0-for-2. The Statesmen also came out on top in the ground ball battle, 38-30.
 
Matt Knote ended the afternoon with 18 saves for UMass and his counterpart, Elhanan Wilson, turned aside 13 in the cage for Hobart.
The Gorillas will be back in action on Saturday, April 6, when the squad will host Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. on Garber Field.
