Men’s Lacrosse Falls Short At Brown, 11-10

Shane O’Leary finished with a hat trick for UMass while Mason Bregman added three points on a goal and two assists.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team fell on the road at Brown on Friday afternoon, 11-10. Shane O'Leary finished with a hat trick for UMass while Mason Bregman added three points on a goal and two assists.
 
Brown jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 10:18 to go in the opening quarter before Bregman found Conor Foley for the first UMass goal of the day with 7:58 remaining. Dillon Arrant's second goal of the season tied things up at 2-2 before O'Leary beat the horn to make it 3-3 with no time left in the first.
 
Grant Breyo scored his first of two goals just over 90 seconds into the second quarter before the Bears netted three unanswered to pull ahead 7-4 with 5:33 to go in the second. Bregman's second assist of the opening half found Carter Castillo for the final goal of the first half with 3:52 remaining to make it 7-5 at the break in favor of Brown. Brown finished the opening half with a 27-17 shot advantage while UMass outshot the Bears 21-11 in the second half.
 
O'Leary scored twice in the third quarter to bring him to 14 goals on the season, first putting home his second of the day to bring UMass back within two before capping off the third with his hat trick to bring the count to 9-8 in favor of Brown heading into the fourth. Charles Kurtz tied it at 9-9 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game before Breyo's second goal gave UMass its first lead of the day at 10-9 with 8:17 left. Brown answered with the game-tying goal at the 6:55 mark and scored the game's final goal with 4:34 to go.
 
Matt Knote posted nine of his 13 saves in the first half for the Minutemen and faced 24 shots on goal on the day. Jack Wittmaack finished with a pair of caused turnovers for a UMass squad that finished with five to Brown's 12. Caleb Hammett controlled a team-high 10 faceoffs and added nine ground balls.
 
The Minutemen wrap up their two-game road trip on Saturday, March 30 with a 12 p.m. start at Hobart before returning to Garber Field on Saturday, April 6 for a 1 p.m. matchup against Saint Joseph's.
