Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Escapes With 12-11 Win Over UAlbany

AMHERST, Mass.- The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team maintained their home unbeaten streak this season with a 12-11 victory over UAlbany. The Minutemen improve to 4-1 while the Great Danes go to 0-4.
Three Gorillas had multi-goal outings, led by attackman Mason Bregman with two goals and equally as many assists. Captain Mike Tobin recorded a pair of goals and added an assist while Conor Foley posted his first multi-goal performance as a Minuteman to go along with a helper.
Goalkeeper Matt Knote made seven saves to backstop the Minuteman defense in the win. Short-stick defensive midfielder Matt Caddigan had a team-high two caused turnovers while Caleb Hammett had nine ground balls with 17 face-off wins.
After UAlbany opened the game's scoring at the 13:09 mark, the Minutemen rattled off three straight goals with tallies from Zack Auble, Mike Tobin and Shane O'Leary. The Great Danes added another first quarter goal as UMass hung to a 3-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, Tobin found the back of the net for the second time while Bregman added his first to extend the lead to 5-2. Caelin Lewis potted another one for UMass to keep alive his five-game goal streak since coming to Amherst. Going into the break, UMass held a narrow 6-5 lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Gorillas scored four unassisted goals, highlighted by a Caleb Hammett tally off the faceoff to put UMass up 8-7. Bregman and Grant Breyo added two more as the Gorillas had a three goal cushion heading to the fourth.
In the final frame, UAlbany struck first to bring them within two. Conor Foley and Carter Castillo scored back-to-back goals to give UMass a four goal lead, its largest of the game, with just over ten minutes remaining. The Great Danes scored three unanswered goals to end the game but came up short as UMass escaped with a 12-11 victory.
At the faceoff X, UAlbany's Regan Endres and Hammett were near even, but Endres ultimately won the battle going 14-27. Between the pipes, Knote turned aside seven shots while Landon Whitney made ten saves for the Great Danes in the loss.
The Minutemen close out their homestand next Saturday when they welcome the Vermont Catamounts to Garber Field. Faceoff is at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
