Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Nipped By #19 Rutgers, 10-9

March 16, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse held a 7-5 advantage at halftime, but No. 19 Rutgers responded by outscoring the Gorillas 4-1 in the third quarter to edge UMass, 10-9, on Saturday at Weldon E. Howitt Field. The setback leaves the Gorillas at 4-3, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 6-2.

UMass continued its trend of a balanced offensive effort as eighth individuals combined for the nine tallies on the day, led by senior Grant Breyo's four points on two goals and two assists to go along with two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Seniors Mike Tobin and Anthony Sericolo contributed a goal and two assists apiece, while Tobin also logged five ground balls, and Mason Bregman had a goal and an assist on the day. Caleb Hammett won 9-of-22 faceoffs and corralled five ground balls.

Shane Knobloch paced the Rutgers attack with a hat trick and an assist, while Colin Kurdyla had four points as well (1g, 3a). Ross Scott scored twice and Tanyr Krummenacher rounded out the multi-point producers with a goal and an assist. Matt Soutar went 7-for-10 over X with five ground balls and Cole Brams was 6-for-12.

The teams traded goals in the opening five minutes of the contest before Caelin Lewis' long range strike put UMass ahead 2-1 with 8:04 on the clock and extended his scoring streak to seven straight in the Maroon & White. The Scarlet Knights followed with a man-up tally and added another for a 3-2 advantage before the Gorillas added goals from Connor Foley and Tobin to close out the quarter with a 4-3 lead.

Rutgers began the second with a pair of goals to go back on top before UMass closed the half with three in the final 5:58, capped by Breyo at 2:07 to put the Gorillas on top, 7-5 at the intermission.

A trio of Scarlet Knight goals in a span of 3 minutes, 50 seconds in the third erased a UMass lead for the final time of the day. Tallies from Bregman and freshman Charles Kurtz leveled the score twice more down the stretch, but Knobloch netted the game-winner with 2:13 to play.

Rutgers finished the day with a 50-39 advantage in shots and collected 32 ground balls to UMass' 25. Goalkeeper Matt Knote logged 16 saves for the Gorillas and Cardin Stoller stopped 19 between the pipes for the Scarlet Knights.

Massachusetts will close out its non-conference slate next Friday, March 22, at Brown at 1 p.m.
